A Slice of Home Wilmington, DE – Thanksgiving Day 2011 |
A Dutch friend of mine keeps bringing up the question of the origin of Thanksgiving and why we celebrate it. "It's about genocide, right?" It may be argued that there are truths and fallacies alike that are wrapped up in this statement that might be teased out by someone with a subtle, sharp and clever mind. But since I'm the one writing this post, that informed response will be absent. Instead my response is this picture. These pies were made and brought by aunts and uncles and brothers, sisters and cousins as they shared an evening under one roof. (This is my cheesy (and sugary) visual metaphor of family together.)
History and first origins need not stain every tradition. If it's an opportunity to say 'I love you' to friends and family and commune over delicious food, what's there not to celebrate?
Happy Thanksgiving from Cambodia
