Tat Fan waterfall is 120 meters (393 ft for those of you in 'Murica) of raw power. The streams are comparatively thin in the height of the dry season when the picture was taken but are a portrait of unbridled power when after the rains. It's the tallest waterfall in Laos but is still 8x shorter than Angel Falls, Venezuela – the tallest waterfall in the world. Yet Tan Fan does not disappoint. It erupts from uninterrupted jungle and seems to take days to reach the massive plunge pool far below. The paradox of the violence of thunderous, crushing water and the salve of being diminished by nature is what is true and beautiful in a waterfall and for these reasons we love them as we do.

Behind me was a guesthouse and restaurant. I spotted something not as majestic but altogether stranger – a man looking as though he were about to perform a trapeze act on a shingled roof.
